Potential for Major DOI/HHS Reductions
We have been hearing about potential proposed budgetary and/or workforce reductions at the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Interior (DOI). We have been told that HHS may be considering reduction of 50% and that DOI is considering a reduction of up to 40%.
As you can imagine, this will have severe ramifications for Indian Country, as funding to Indian Country and Tribally serving personnel are already woefully inadequate across the federal government. We will continue our advocacy efforts to ensure that our federal funding and the federal employees that serve us are exempt from these indiscriminate reductions.
We strongly encourage everyone to advocate for these exemptions. As Tribal Leaders are in town for the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies hearings on the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, we encourage you to reinforce this message in your verbal testimony. It is critically important that all Tribal Nations remind Members of Congress and the Trump Administration that funding to Indian Country and federal employees serving Tribal Nations are essential to upholding trust and treaty obligations.
